I’m a lipstick addict. I love lipstick and usually carry a variety of shades with me. This year, when the Sephora Favorites, Give Me More Lip, came out, I thought about thirty seconds before plopping down the $68 to try a wide variety of brands and lipstick types.
The biggest problem with my review, below, is that I have no swatches. I gave away a couple of the lipsticks before I thought about swatching. If you’re looking for swatches, this video was really great. Elle doesn’t review the longevity of the lipsticks (and we have different opinions on some), but I like the speed at which she swatches them and the fact that she goes from light to dark. For some of the swatch videos I watched, the shades were distorted by staining from previous shades. Tati does swatch them on her arm, if you’re interested in that as well.
The set retails at $68 U.S. They claim the overall value is $254. Below, I broke out the cost of a full size at Sephora as well as the approximate cost of the product in the sample.
I like a wide variety of colors, so when I’m looking for a lipstick, I’m more interested in: shade opacity and/or buildability, longevity and likelihood of transfer, the way the formula feels going on, and the way it feels throughout the day. I’ve worn each of these shades for a full day of talking, eating, and drinking. I tried to note the way a lipstick reapplies, if it was problematic.
Reviews (In order of Left to Right above)
0.04 oz Sephora Collection Cream Lip Stain in #01 Always Red. (Full size is .169 oz for $14. Value of sample is $3.31.)
I hardcore hated this lip stain. It smudged out around the edges, leaving me with this faint Kool-Aid stain around my lips. The color is similar to OFRA’s Atlantic City, which is one of my favorites. But I felt self conscious about it and had to keep checking it. It’s a little more drying than I like, and it’s definitely a stain. I had to scrub to get it off at the end of the day. Maybe I’d like this formula in a different shade, but I’m probably never going to find out.
0.03 oz Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Pur Couture in N 01, Le Rouge (Full size is .13 oz for $37. Value is $8.54.)
Everything about this satin-finish pure-red lipstick is luxurious. The gold packaging is classic YSL. The formula is moisturizing with great buildability. The shade is iconic blue-red. It isn’t transfer proof, but the color does stain your lips with impressive staying power, minimizing the need for reapplication. I will get use of this sample size.
0.035 oz Marc Jacobs Beauty Le Marc Lip Crème in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (Full size is .12 oz for $30. Value is $8.75.)
The satin-finish formula was similar to the YSL, but not as creamy and luxurious-feeling. It applied smoothly, and I like it a little better than the Bobbi Brown, though I have a hard time isolating why. It had about the same level of transfer and longevity. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is described as a “baked rose” shade.
0.13 oz Bobbi Brown Luxe Lip Color in Brocade (Full size. $37.)
This rich purple-toned shade applies smoothly and evenly. It’s obviously not transfer proof, but I was pleased with the staying power for what it is. I’m biased toward transfer-proof liquid lipsticks, so I probably won’t get much use out of this satin-finish, purple/plum full size lipstick.
0.1 oz Too Faced Melted Latex Liquified High Shine Lipstick in Shade Hot Mess (Full size is .4 oz at $21. Value is $5.25.)
I am enamored with the high gloss, plump look of this liquid lipstick. It’s very glam. After about thirty minutes, it dried down somewhat, but it doesn’t have that transfer-proof finish of my favorite matte liquid lipsticks. I was pretty disappointed in how quickly the lipstick transferred. It left my lips pale in the center and hot pink on the outside after a short time and with only a cup of coffee.
0.03 oz Urban Decay Cosmetics Vice Lipstick in Big Bang (Full size is .11 oz for $17. Value is $4.64.)
Holy glitter, batman! This lipstick is glam-heavy. It’s sparkly city. The hot pink shade looks brighter and more neon from the flecks of glitter, but it’s not actually that bright of a base by itself. It needs a little layering to get the opacity I like. However, it’s a fun formula. Even for a matte-finish girl such as myself. It didn’t fade too badly.
0.14 oz Wander Beauty Wanderout Dual Lipstick in Nikki Beach/BB (Full size. $30.)
I don’t know why I liked this so much. The formula is a bit heavy and doesn’t apply easily. I like the shades a LOT (a watermelon and “soft rose” combo). It has decent staying-power for a lipstick. I’m grossed out by the packaging for some reason. The lipstick tubes face each other with nothing in between. So the packaging is just a hollow tube that you plug both lipsticks into. Not sure why this grosses me out. I guess because you could in theory twist one of the lipsticks up and mash it into the other? The packaging does prevent that somewhat, but it weirds me out still! The two shades are an awesome day-to-night duo.
0.09 oz Touch In Sol Metallist Liquid Foil Lipstick Duo in #5 Jasmine and Brownie (Full size is .084 oz for $25. There are some inconsistencies in reporting the size of this sample. The tube itself says it’s .04 oz lipgloss and .05 oz liquid lipstick, so I think I’m going to call it full sized.)
When I watched swatch videos of this, everyone seemed to dismiss this shade. I assumed it was the shade itself. But it’s the product. I don’t like this product at all. It feels heavy and grainy on the lips. The shade is fine, but it’s a bit uneven.
0.16 oz Anastasia Beverly Hills Lip Gloss in Vintage. (Full size. $16.)
This full-sized lip gloss made my lips appear plump and full. I like this shade, and I would definitely consider purchasing others. It’s a little glittery, but not overwhelming. It fades evenly with eating and drinking. It’s easy to reapply, though by the third reapplication, I did have some issues with flaking.
0.03 oz Smashbox Always On Liquid Lipstick in Driver’s Seat (Full size is .13 oz for $24. Value is $5.54.)
I really do enjoy this matte formula. It has pretty good staying power and isn’t too drying. I still prefer OFRA’s liquid lipsticks, except the applicator tip for this is amazing. It’s thinner and more pointed, allowing for easier, more precise application. I wish all liquid lipsticks would copy this design. This particular shade is also nicely flattering, with a slight coral tone.
0.1 oz tarte™ Rainforest of the Sea™ Quench Lip Rescue in Nude (Full size. $19.)
This is truly a nude shade. It’s very sheer and very moisturizing. It smells great. I’ll be using it as a chapstick, as the color is so sheer on me.
0.05 oz Hourglass Girl Lip Stylo in Influencer (Full size is .09 oz for $32. Value is $17.78.)
It’s a fairly typical pencil-style lipstick. It’s far more moisturizing than most with a nice, tame pink that veers toward a dusty nude. I really enjoy using this as an alternate to a chapstick, but the lip stylo does have a faint waxy smell that’s vaguely unpleasant.
0.09 oz Laura Mercier Cosmetics Velour Lovers Lip Colour Sensual in Muted Pink (Full size is .12 oz for $28. Value is $21.)
This looks like a pretty, classic light pink color when swatched. However, I do not love the formula. I don’t find the shade to be buildable. When I tried to make the color more opaque, it very quickly began to look streaky and settled into the super fine lines of my lips, with noticeable color variation. It made my lips look patchy. I would not purchase this. At best, maybe it could layer over a more opaque color, but I’ve passed it on to a friend.
0.17 oz Huda Beauty Liquid Matte in Bombshell (Full size. $20.)
With a name like “Bombshell,” I would expect something more vibrant than this salmon shade. The matte formula is almost watery when applied and takes a little bit of time to dry down. However, once it’s dried down, it’s nearly transfer proof. It does stay a little tacky, which I don’t prefer as it is less comfortable on the lips.
0.06 oz Dior Lip Maximizer in Pink 001 (Full size is .2 oz for $33. Value is $9.9.)
This is a sheer gloss. It has some pretty serious tingly power, for the “lip maximizing” aspect. I layered it over the Nikki Beach shade of the Wander Beauty lipstick, and it was amazing. This small sample size is probably good enough for me, but I could see the full size being worth the value, if that’s what you’re interested in.
Total value of products: $231.71 (Not $254*)
Total size of products: 1.155 oz (Not 1.215 oz*)
*Clearly some of the reporting is iffy. Sizes claimed on the box and online at Sephora don’t match the packaging necessarily. This is the closest I could get with all the information I had available.
